Obsession with national security

Inevitably, a national security apparatus was under direct control of the ruling elite. It was usually an instrument of oppression, operating in secret and beyond any constraints. Its actions were justified under the rubric of protecting “national security,” and questioning its activities was portrayed as unpatriotic or even treasonous.

Progressive Advances in the Past 100 Years

This table is adapted from American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America by Colin Woodard. Any additional interpretation is mine and mine alone.

American Nations demonstrates how the United States is deeply divided along cultural boundaries, with Yankee Culture (New England, New York, The Midlands, and the Pacific Northwest) generally favoring progressive programs and the Dixie Culture (Deep South, Appalachia, and the Far west) adamantly opposed to all of these programs. Other pages on this site will go into more detail about how this cultural divide manifests in the US today and the results of this perpetual conflict between cultural alliances. A map illustrating the regional cultures can be found here.

The Psychology of American Fascism: the Triumph of the Authoritarian Id in Post-Christian USA

Submitted by TWIRIMaster on Sun, 01/22/2017 - 00:07

"This book looks at the last two centuries of world history, and especially the last four decades of American history, from a psycho-dynamic or neo-Freudian perspective. It shows how Freud, Darwin and Marx laid the foundation for World War II and how the latter two, with the aid of psychological humanism in the press, government and our schools secularizing the American mind, set the stage for the complete triumph of liberal fascism in all facets of daily life."

Fascism: A Very Short Introduction

Submitted by TWIRIMaster on Sat, 01/14/2017 - 10:24

"What is fascism? Is it revolutionary? Or is it reactionary? Can it be both?

Fascism is notoriously hard to define. How do we make sense of an ideology that appeals to streetfighters and intellectuals alike? That is overtly macho in style, yet attracts many women? That calls for a return to tradition while maintaining a fascination with technology? And that preaches violence in the name of an ordered society?

The Republican Noise Machine: Right-Wing Media and How It Corrupts Democracy

Submitted by TWIRIMaster on Fri, 01/06/2017 - 14:09

In The Republican Noise Machine, David Brock skillfully documents perhaps the most important but least understood political development of the last thirty years: how the Republican Right has won political power and hijacked public discourse in the United States.
